First Nations Foundation

October 2022

First Nations Foundation (FNF) is a successful Indigenous financial wellbeing foundation led by an Indigenous majority board since 2006. It has a strong trust reputation with both financial and Indigenous community sectors, a powerful track record of results, agility and innovation. FNF acts as the bridge to economic freedom for Indigenous Australians. Research released in 2019 by FNF in partnership with the Centre for Social Impact and NAB identified that only 1 in 10 Indigenous Australians are financially secure, compared with 1 in 2 non-Indigenous. We drive down this financial exclusion rate by: • mapping Indigenous financial capability needs • collaborating with financial services partners and Indigenous community partners • delivering high-quality Indigenous financial literacy education and outreach to build Indigenous Australian's money skills.

About First Nations Foundation

First Nations Foundation (FNF) is a successful Indigenous financial wellbeing foundation led by an Indigenous majority board since 2006. It has a strong trust reputation with both financial and Indigenous community sectors, a powerful track record of results, agility and innovation.

FNF developed and for 10 years delivered a highly successful Indigenous financial literacy training program called My Moola. Facilitated exclusively by Indigenous trainers, the face to face training achieved significant positive impact for participants: 90% reported they felt more confident managing money, 83% said they were better at managing money and 70% felt more confident about their financial future as a direct result of the program. In November 2019 FNF released My Money Dream, the worlds first online financial education program created by Indigenous people, for Indigenous people. The program is now scalable, allowing us to bring critical money skills education to more Indigenous Australians across urban, regional and remote locations.

Started in 2015, FNF’s award-winning superannuation outreach events have now been to 21 Indigenous communities in urban, regional and very remote locations across Australia. We know that with more than $20 billion in lost and unclaimed super in Australia, there is going to be a significant amount belonging to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people – money they could be growing for a more secure financial future or in some cases, using for immediate poverty alleviation. In 2019 FNF stunned government and financial services with its outreach efforts as since commencing this outreach we have reunited Indigenous communities with $24 million in superannuation, helping more than 1600 people.

The Foundation has a strong research program history with 11 reports in 12 years. In 2019 we partnered with the Centre for Social Impact and National Australia Bank to release ground-breaking research into the dire financial position of First Nations people. With so little research into the economic disparity that Indigenous Australians face, this research was critical to highlight the dire financial situation that many community members are living in and inform policy and industry change that will start shifting Indigenous Australians towards a position of economic equity. FNF plans to continue this research focus into the future to ensure a trustworthy, community led base of knowledge about Indigenous Australian’s perceptions of wealth, engagement with financial services and education needs around money.
